The spaces in between

Paulina Ree's atelier in warm light, a new still life on the easel

There is so much to write about, to reflect and to see as I am living in a period of much uncertainty and the unknown is strange, daunting and scary. So I lean in purposely into the sweet moments, stopping when I see a beautiful flower. Smiling more as I see my children enjoying their new home, a home I am building with lots of love and dedication to them. Every moment I get to come to my atelier and see the art I made, during my marriage, as my marriage fell apart, and how this new phase is evolving, I give myself the space to make art as it feels right to me, right here, right now.

I have been on a healing journey for the last 5 years, healing trauma, learning to love myself with deep compassion and understanding for the lows that life has put forward for me. And I am feeling it all within me, today more than ever as I look around, as I read the notes I had made when I read Ifigenia, a book that touched my soul for its tenderness, for representing the woman experience in its complexity, the deep conditioning, the things we endure because we believe we must, how we can have a destiny fulfilled by simply fitting into what is expected of us.

I have long decided that I would rebel against that sort of destiny, that my life would be in my terms and that I would live a happy and peaceful life that I carve every day for myself. It is not always easy, especially when one is standing against so much. But that is where my purpose serves me best, the one that focuses on my art being about my life experience, about my own mental health journey and about those special moments and people we cross paths with, and how they make our lives so very special.
