Bio

B.1981, Quito, Ecuador

Paulina Ree is a multidisciplinary Ecuadorian artist, activist, and educator currently based in Oslo. Her practice spans painting, drawing, and forthcoming performance work, exploring themes of identity, diaspora, and cultural reclamation through a womanist lens. Her work is deeply informed by her transnational journey—from Ecuador to the United States, later to the United Kingdom, and finally to Norway—alongside dedicated research into historically marginalized women artists, reflecting a commitment to intersectional narratives of belonging, care, and resilience.

Ree’s current series merges figurative oil painting with traditional craft techniques like embroidery, knitting, and sewing—practices historically dismissed as "women’s work." Through this fusion, she challenges artistic hierarchies while documenting her intimate journey navigating mental health, self-motherhood, and healing. Her introspective self-portraits and luminous, Andean-inspired palette trace the physical, emotional, and psychological borders she has crossed throughout her life.

An active member of the Norwegian visual arts organizations BKA and NBK, Ree has received international recognition, including being shortlisted for the VAO25 UK and International Emerging Artists Award and named a finalist for the Boynes Artist Award. Her work has been exhibited in Oslo, Prague, London, and Rome.

She is the founder of We Women in Art, a collective supporting women artists, and works from her studio, Sofonisba Atelier. In late 2025, Ree will launch *The Self/Motherhood Project*, a performance and installation centering mental health awareness for mothers and caregivers. In 2026, she will introduce a companion podcast designed as a dialogue-based platform for women working across the arts to share their experiences and insights.
