Demystifying Drawing: Charcoal and Collective Memory

Charcoal is one of the oldest drawing materials we have. People used it on cave walls tens of thousands of years ago, long before anyone wrote. In this class we go back to that starting point to show that drawing isn’t a special talent. It’s a basic human language we all share.

We’ll work hands-on with charcoal to explore line, shadow, gesture and mark-making. Along the way we’ll look at how art has carried our collective memory from prehistoric times onward. The class is open to complete beginners and to anyone who wants to loosen up and reconnect with drawing.

In this class you will:

  • Get comfortable with charcoal and its expressive range

  • Try simple ways of seeing and drawing: gesture, light and shadow

  • Explore how art has kept human stories alive since prehistoric times

  • Let go of the idea that you “can’t draw”

Sunday 25 October · 14:00–17:00

The Sketching Habit: Drawing for Wellbeing

This class is about starting a regular sketching practice with pencil and charcoal, and about why that practice matters. Our guide is Your Brain on Art by Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross, which looks at what research is learning about how making art affects the mind, stress and wellbeing. We’ll also look at how artists through history have used their sketchbooks to observe, think and stay grounded.

You’ll leave with practical techniques and a simple routine you can keep up at home.

In this class you will:

  • Draw from observation with pencil and charcoal

  • Learn about research on creativity and wellbeing from Your Brain on Art

  • Look at sketchbook practices from art history

  • Leave with a simple, sustainable sketching routine

Join both Sundays for 990 kr.

Charcoal first, then the sketching habit. Each class stands on its own, and together they make a small beginning.
