The Self-Motherhood Project

Motherhood remade me, and almost undid me.

Motherhood remade me, and almost undid me.

Motherhood remade me, and almost undid me.

I am a woman in my early forties who keeps choosing my mental health, while raising three children and staying active in the art world and at school. I keep finding myself talking about how hard the everyday can be, yet there is rarely room to talk about our mental wellbeing. This is an invitation: to sit privately with your own, and just as importantly, to hold it together, as a community.

WHY THIS SERIES EXISTS

The scale behind the silence.

of the household mental load is carried by mothers

of new mothers worldwide experience a mental disorder

women are outside the workforce because of unpaid care

women in Norway experience depressive symptoms around pregnancy and birth

This work stands alongside a wider movement for maternal mental health, like the Maternal Mental Health Alliance’s This is Also Motherhood. The Self-Motherhood Project began on World Mental Health Day 2025, and it is only the beginning. There is more to come.

The average is a 49-year-old woman who works outside the home and gives twenty hours a week of unpaid care, often to her own mother.

FROM THE EXHIBITIONS

Mental health awareness, made tangible.

THE FILM

In my own words.

I tell the story of the project in my own words. In 2026 it grows into a documentary, built on footage from the first edition, made alongside Make Mothers Matter, Landsforeningen 1001 dager and Historisk Morskap, with art historian Catherine McCormack as strategic mentor.

THE EDITIONS · EVERY YEAR ON 10 OCTOBER

One date. A growing series.

2025 · FIRST EDITION

Five works, one evening, and a room that held it together.

2026 · SECOND EDITION

Opens on World Mental Health Day, 10 October 2026.

SUPPORT · THE MATRON CIRCLE

Help this project grow.

The Matron Circle is a small circle of supporters who keep the Self-Motherhood Project moving, the documentary, the exhibitions and the quiet work between them. Every matron receives an original artwork each year, and my gratitude all year round.
